Andy Burnham, the UK’s heath secretary, has come under criticism today as the public have complained that conflicting advice has been given to expectant mothers on how to avoid swine flu.

The pandemic has gripped the nation for months, with diagnosed numbers constantly on the rise. Previously we have been told that a third of the UK’s population could have the illness by this winter, which includes half of our children. Some are reporting that there is no reason to panic and that the media has blown it all out of proportion, but with statistics like this it is difficult not to.

The advice given to pregnant women and mothers with children under the age of 5 has caused much confusion; a few days ago they were told to continue with their daily routine, but more recently they have been advised to stay at home and avoid crowded places. This conflicting information is causing upset, as these women need to know what is best for them. A new mother died of swine flu last week; as soon as the swine flu vaccine is ready, ministers wish for pregnant women to be a priority group. However, this has brought about even more conflict as the Royal College of Midwives advise against innoculations during pregnancy. The National Childbirth Trust has even made the suggestion that couples planning to start a family should wait until the pandemic is over, but this was soon dismissed as an over-reaction by Alan Johnson, ex Health Secretary.
